Do you have any summer traditions or activities that help you improve or restore your work-life balance?
I travel a lot for work, and summer is one of my busier travel times.
But it’s also one of my family’s favorite times of the year for enjoying the great outdoors.
This creates a bit of tension and frustration for all involved, because we end up missing some great things we could have enjoyed if I didn’t have to be away at that particular time.
Gratefully, we’ve discovered one thing that really helps restore my sense of work-life balance, and helps our family grow closer together: Â a holiday at a cottage on a lake.
Each year for five years now, a friend has loaned us his cottage for a week. Â It is always our favorite and best week of the year. We’ve made so many wonderful memories as a family, and have enjoyed meeting other people who live in, or are visiting, nearby cottages.
We don’t have to go anywhere, do anything, or think about anything else, except for being together and enjoying all that the cottage and lake have to offer.
We just got back from this summer’s cottage holiday today, and thankfully, our home wasn’t broken into like last year!
We’re so blessed and grateful for the wonderful time we had:
- My five kids made some new friends and got to jet ski, ride in a boat, and go tubing (that’s two of my kids in the picture above).
- My wife discovered a new favorite outdoor activity: Â kayaking.
- I enjoyed reading a novel, which I haven’t done in a long, long time (I mostly read about business, leadership, and theology).
- I loved being able to give my family my undivided attention and do whatever they wanted to do whenever they wanted to do it.
- Even our dog enjoyed being on the water and meeting new friends.
This family holiday was just what we needed, and it happened at just the right time for us.
What event, activity or tradition helps you reconnect with family and boost your work-life balance?
